Miles River Race - Dakota Girl Rolls To Second Place

Last weekend I had the pleasure of sailing the Miles River Race - hosted by the Miles River Yacht Club. I raced on the J35 Dakota Girl.

The forecast was for 15-20kts out of the North - which would have set up a rhumb line drag race to the first mark of the course at the mouth of Eastern Bay.

But the fickle winds of the Chesapeake Bay had something else in mind and the wind settled into an easterly flow ranging from 0-12kts. To make things even more interesting the current was RIPPING and the mark rounding was (as you can see in the picture) quite interesting.

Through good communication, boat handling, and concentration we secured second place - something I think we all are very proud of. It was a good race, with good crew, on a good boat. You can’t ask for more. Thanks to everyone for a great race!

Sailing News on the Radio

In the past week there have been three very interesting stories about sailing. The first story was about the National Maritime Heritage Foundation’s High School Racing Program. I happen to coach the program, and think that the story that was produced was really fantastic. You can listen to it here.

NPR also ran a story about increasing interest in sailing due to high gasoline and diesel prices. It just might be a good time to be in the sailing instruction business as a new wave of water lovers leave powerboating behind and become sailors. You can here that story here.

Finally, today NPR has been running a story about the sailboat manufacturer Beneteau. Check it out and listen here.

Back in Seattle for the first time in years - and it feels good. I love this place, always have. Of course it is sunny and 80 and I am here for a regatta - so what isn’t there too like?

The New Gale Force Sailing

Change it is a coming. In the next few weeks look for major changes to the Gale Force Sailing website including new site navigation and expanded Gale Force Video. I’m off to Seattle, Detroit, Chicago and beyond over the next few weeks and will be publishing the travels, trials and trevails right here.

Additonally the Ocean Conservation Yacht Club - a collaboration with Oceana will be coming online soon too. So stay tuned for that. In the meanwhile, here is our first video blog posts.

It is rough around the edges, and really the outtakes are better than the real piece. But hey…I am learning here! Stay tuned for more.

Until next time…
